Health Tips for the Modern Filipina

#

Age is just a number and the hospital is just a building. Until of course, things go awry with your health and you’re suddenly left with a weakened body and an empty bank account. But you shouldn’t look at it as a ticking time bomb.

A woman’s body naturally undergoes a lot of changes as she ages; lean tissue deteriorates and fat starts building up. Muscles, bones, and organs lose cells and minerals and gradually become less conditioned. These are inevitable but the good news is, developing a few good habits and making healthy lifestyle choices can effectively slow the process down.

As a woman, you’ve got a lot going on for you. As hard as it is being a woman, now is also a good time to be a woman. With all the advances in women’s rights and with women constantly breaking gender stereotypes in the Philippines, it’s the best time to grab life by the balls and just take control of your own destiny.

So keep calm and stay fit with these simple tips to improve your overall health and well-being.

Get moving.

This is a no-brainer. Exercise and other forms of physical activity significantly lessen the development of heart disease among women.

While hitting the gym is one of the best things health professionals would advise you to do, aerobic exercises can greatly improve your cardio as well. Just take 30 minutes a day to go for a jog, attend a dance class, or do a bit of swimming and you’ve got that out of the way.

Don’t stress out.

Stress can make your body vulnerable to a lot of health risks. Everyday responsibilities can make it easy for you to overlook this fact so don’t wait until it takes a toll on you. If you find yourself stuck in a situation where you’re experiencing an immense amount of pressure, take a step back and relax. Go out for a walk, indulge in your hobbies or simply meditate so you gain perspective and plant your feet on the ground again.

Mental health is every bit as important as your physical well-being and it deserves just as much attention.

Ditch the bad stuff.

Life past your teenage years gets a lot more complicated and a lot less fun if you don’t watch out for yourself. A night at the bar when you’re past your early 20s could prove to be hellishly devastating the next morning. But while heavy drinking isn’t a good idea for most people, it doesn’t hurt to have just a drink a day. Everything in moderation.

Get checked.

As an adult, it’s your responsibility to keep track of your health. An occasional trip to the doctor’s office will always be a better idea than surfing the web.

And while it isn’t required to get your mammaries checked on a monthly basis anymore, it’s still advisable to have a mammogram at least once a year to make sure you’re in the clear.
