The question “Why do you do what you do?” is probably one of the most philosophical questions one can ever encounter and hope to answer in his lifetime. But for us at ALLCARE, the answer to why we do what we do is less philosophical and more forward - it’s the right thing to do. There’s a problem that needs to be solved and we are determined to be the ones to solve it best. 

The Problems We Face

You’re probably wondering what exactly we are trying to solve. The idea of benefits isn’t exactly new, we know. But the way benefits has been provided for has been discriminatory and in some cases, unfair. Don’t believe us? Here are some TRUTHS that push us to do what we do.

1. Some labor practices in the country are unfair like job-contracting for regular jobs.

While we don’t want to throw any shade on what our government has accomplished in prohibiting contract jobs (look up “Endo” in Philippine Labor news via Google), unfortunately, there is still quite a number of companies who get away with identifying regular, business-necessary jobs as contractual or project-based jobs. When these companies use “contractual” on jobs, workers who fill up those needs are denied any type of benefit that they should have been entitled to as part of the regular business workforce. 

2. The majority of the real workforce in the country are not in large corporations.

When we talk about work and benefits in one discussion, the innate picture that comes to mind is that of an employee working in a corporation. While that is what naturally comes to mind, truthfully, there are more workers that work in what we call micro enterprises or those that run small businesses (often unregistered) like online sellers, PUJ fleet owners or even small business outsourcing or consulting gigs than there is in the corporate setting. Having said that, these massive yet underserved workforce do not have any type of benefits and more often than not go on for years without any type of security or insurance.

3. There’s a major shift in employment towards freelancing and gig-working.

The arrival and subsequent popularity of companies like Grab, Uber, Angkas, Honestbee and many others has created a massive market of gig workers - people that prefer the freedom to choose working hours and freedom to manage income over a full time job. And because more and more people are now prioritizing freedom than stability, they also take control of their own benefits that are more often than not non-existent. 

But why are benefits important anyway?

Worker benefits, by definition, are products and services that are given to an employee or worker as a result of being part of or being a valuable contributor to a company. In the context of employee benefits, companies give these for two primary reasons:  1) to be a recruitment and retention tool and 2) to ensure that employees are well to manage company productivity. More commonly known to us, benefits are provided to employees by their employers when they become regularized or after having stayed with the company for 6 months (probation period). But why does one have to wait 6 months to become eligible for such benefits? Or more importantly, what if you are part of the 3 groups that we identified above who do not have employers who willingly sponsor benefits? Do we just accept that there are no options for them?
