6 Ways to Stay on Budget Without Being a Grinch

Giving back doesn’t have to cost a lot, and the season of giving is forgiving to everyone. Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean you need to throw your budget out the window. Giving gifts to loved ones is a great way to show them that you care. But how can you do that while sticking to your budget plans? Here are some tips.

  1. Be Honest

The first tip is the easiest one because it involves the least amount of cash. You can tell your family and friends if you’re on a budget that you can’t get the presents this year and in exchange, you don’t expect them to get you any presents either. In a way, you’re giving them the gift of not having to spend time and money to get you a gift. It would be a mutual understanding.

  1. Secret Santa

You can also suggest to your group of friends or even family to have a Secret Santa exchange gift instead. That way, everyone gets a gift and each of you would only have to spend on one person. You can also set the budget limit on how much the max amount is that you can spend on the gift.

  1. DIY Gifts

If you know how to knit, crochet, or other DIY gifts you can do this and use those as your gifts. Not only is it more personal, but the receiver would feel special having been given something that you took the time, patience, and skill to make. As the saying goes “made with love” (better that than money).

  1. Gift of Time

Offer to have a special get together instead of with friends or family. You can each offer potluck dishes instead of gifts. Not only is this a better option because you get to spend quality time together but each person gives the same amount of effort into the gift, especially when you’ve all been too busy to spend time with each other throughout the year.

  1. Make Food

For a minimal cost, you can also bake cookies for your loved ones. You can even make it fun by decorating the cookies based on their personalities or looks. Baking doesn’t take much time and money but shows the effort you put into it. Just like DIY gifts, people will appreciate the personalization that goes along with it.

  1. Only Give Gifts to People Who Matter

Don’t make the mistake of giving someone you barely know, a gift. If your budget is tight, only choose people worth giving gifts to like close friends and immediate family. Skip the high school friends with whom you haven’t heard from in years.

When all is said and done, don’t stress out too much about gift-giving. Most people wouldn’t mind not even receiving a gift in the first place. If they truly loved you, they would appreciate your friendship, love, time, and everything else a material gift cannot achieve. The most important thing for the holidays is spending time with loved ones. Gift or no gift.
